In an effort to get to the bottom of the ongoing steroid scandal, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell said he intends to probe active Major League Baseball players. Keith Ausbrock, Republican general counsel for the committee, added that lawmakers are following the lead of Mitchell.
Senator Mitchell will probe deeper and harder than he has in previous investigations, “whether you think it fair or not, whether you think it justified or not”.
Mitchell’s probe may be inspired by an August 1997 New York Police Department probe of suspect Abner Louima. While in custody, police employed the traditional justice-by-rape approach, attempting to extract a truth that was apparently stuck deep inside Louima’s rectum.
Police brutally beat and sodomized Louima, a Hatian immigrant, with a plunger in an attempt to unclog the pipes of justice.
Sometimes the truth hurts.
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig spoke to the owners about Mitchell’s investigation. Asked if he had urged the clubs to cooperate with Mitchell, Selig said, “Urge is probably not strong enough.”
Selig hopes that the players union will be open to a probe, otherwise, he may be left holding the bag. Baseball officials certainly do not want the clean-up from this lengthy probe to get any messier than it has already become.
In all likelihood, the MLB Players Association will attempt to fight the probe, undoubtedly fearing the warts of steroid abuse that may be brought to light. Though, I’ve heard fighting it just makes it worse.
The Players Association declined comment, perhaps fearing what may be probed next.
